Shree Mahakaleshwar Bhasmarti Rules: The Complete Guide for Devotees

Bhasma Aarti at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is a very unique ritual that is spiritually so powerful and has captured the profundity of Hindu devotion. This is daily at 4 AM bhasma Aarti to Sri Mahakaleshwar, an avatar of Lord Shiva. Knowing the dos and don'ts of attending this revered ritual will help you have a better spiritual experience and also save you many years of struggle while visiting. Here's everything you need to know about Bhasmarti rules at the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

What is Bhasmarti?

Bhasmarti is an hour-long rite where sacred ash, prepared from dried cow dung, is offered to the deity, signifying purity and circularity in the cycle of life. The rite consists of recitation of Vedic mantras and is characterised by powerful vibrations that pervade the atmosphere with deep spiritual energy.

Registration Needs Form: Entry and Participation Guidelines

  • Advance registration: Advance registration is a must to participate at the Bhasmarti. It can be done online through the temple's official website or at the counters provided at the temple.
  • Identification: One should carry an ID while registering and at the entry process. Foreign nationals should carry their passports.
  • Dress Code: The ladies are permitted only in sarees and salwar kameez and the men can take only dhotis. Wearing Western clothes and leather items is totally prohibited.

Entry Timings

  • Entry Time: The devotees need to reach at least before an hour of Aarti starts, that is 3 AM to undergo security checks and sit.
  • Temple Gate Opening: According to the present schedule the temple gate opens at 2:30 AM for Bhasmarti and the entry will be based on first-come-first-serve principles.

Seating Arrangements

  • Nandi Mandapam: It is right opposite to the sanctorum and can seat nearly 100 devotees.
  • Mandapams: Two other Mandapams, that are Ganesh Mandapam and Kartikeya Mandapam are there to accommodate nearly 500 devotees.
  • Barricades: Seating arrangement beyond the Nandi Hall, which can only view it from afar.

Restrictions

  • Garbhagriha: One will not be able to enter into the Garbhagriha, or the inner sanctum of the temple during the Bhasmarti.
  • Electronics: Mobile phones and cameras along with other electronic devices are strictly prohibited being taken inside the temple while the ceremony is in the process.
  • Prohibited Articles: No kind of baggage, food, or liquids shall be permitted inside the sanctum.

Silence and Reseperce

  • Chanting (Jaap): The devotees must chant God's name or mantra to please them and remain silent otherwise to preserve the sanctity of the ritual.
  • Sitting Area Participation: The devotees should stay sitting throughout the Aarti and not get up or walk here and there.

Offering Protocols

  • Bhasma Offering: Only the priests are authorized to offer the bhasma to the deity. Devotees are not allowed to make personal offerings during the Bhasmarti.
  • Prasad: Devotees can receive prasad after the completion of the Aarti.

 

Process After Bhasmarti

  • For offline Bhasmarti booking, you need to apply before one day.
  • Application for admission will be based on the seats or space available.
  • Application for Bhasmarti will be accepted only up to availability, after that no applications shall be entertained.
  • The list shall be declared at 5:00 pm and admission SMS shall be distributed at 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
  • Priorty shall be based upon "first come first get" basis.
  • Every applicant shall have to produce ID card with photo ID proof. PAN card not allow.
  • During Bhasmarti, the devotees shall not offer milk but only Water.
  • During Bhasmarti, no devotee shall be permitted in corridor.
  • After Bhasmarti is over and center Santarem (Garbh Grah) is closed no devotee or visitor shall be given or receive "panchamrita".
  • Only after the riniging of the 1st bell of Lord Mahakal, devotees shall enter center Santarem (Garbh Grah).
  • Permitted devotees shall vacant immediately after ritual of "Jalabhishek".
  • During the ritual of "Jalabhishek", ladies and gents should adorn saree and dhoti or sola respectively.
  • Please bear in mind that all the devotees have only 5 min during "Jalabhishek".
  • Only devotees who have the permission shall enter center Santarem (Garbh Grah).
  • In the event of any violation of above stated rules, the "Permission or Admission" shall be deemed "Cancelled".
  • Do not use polythine bags for offering milk or water to Lord Mahakaleshwer.
  • In the Bhasmarti Rules, changes are possible.
